What $0 gets you

The review
ElevenLabs does not hide its free plan. You get 10,000 credits a month, no card, the full set of voice controls and up to three Studio projects. We checked every number in the table above against elevenlabs.io/pricing on September 22, 2026. The part that matters most is that text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, music and dubbing all spend from that one pool, at different rates. 10,000 credits is real, but it is not 10,000 of everything.
To test it the way we test everything, we gave it a real job: the opening narration for a FreeStack lead-magnet guide, 724 characters long enough to expose pacing and transitions. Take one used Ronan (English, American) at speed 1.05, stability 40%, similarity 80% and style 39%. Take two raised speed to 1.08 and stability to 48%, and lowered style to 30%. Each generation charged exactly 724 credits. Take two was clearly better: tighter pacing, steadier phrasing, fewer exaggerated inflections. The settings made a real difference, not a cosmetic one.
We then moved the same script into Studio, split it into sections and adjusted one section on its own. It works on the free plan, the sections stay organized, and the output downloads. Three projects is enough to learn the workflow and keep a few pieces active. It is not an archive for a publishing operation.
You will not hear the free takes in our video, and that is the point of this review. ElevenLabs says free-plan output can be used noncommercially with attribution, and commercial rights come with paid plans. A monetized review is commercial, so we described the result instead of playing it. The narration in the video comes from a separately licensed voice.
Who should take it: anyone who wants to test AI narration, compare voices, prototype a project, transcribe a small sample or learn Studio before spending money. The voice quality is good enough to make a fair decision on $0.
Who should skip it: anyone who needs free audio for commercial publishing - YouTube with ads, sales funnels, client work. And anyone whose main job is high-volume transcription, music or dubbing, because 10,000 credits does not behave like 10,000 minutes. When the output will make money, Starter at $6/month adds the commercial license and instant voice cloning. Move higher only when your measured usage says so.
The catch
The license, not the voice. ElevenLabs says free-plan output is for noncommercial use with attribution. Put it in a monetized video, an ad, a funnel or client work and you need a paid plan - Starter at $6/month is the first one with a commercial license. The 10,000 credits are also shared across every tool, so they are not 10,000 of everything, and unused free credits do not roll over.
