Descript Might Be the Easiest Way to Edit Your Video - for $0
A great transcript-editing workflow with native captions and useful AI tools. The free plan is a strong starting point, but its credits and exports are limited.
Watch the actual test
Our fresh free-plan test: a talking-avatar clip, transcript cuts, native karaoke captions, AI actions and an actual watermarked 720p export.
What $0 gets you
Every number below is from the vendor's own pricing page, Descript onboarding plan card, account usage and https://www.descript.com/pricing, checked October 4, 2026. The 100 AI credits are one-time at signup.. Not marketing copy - the actual limits.
The review
Descript turns a recording into text you can edit. In our fresh test, deleting words cut a 13.7-second talking-avatar clip to 5.6 seconds. The video and audio followed the transcript edit. That is the reason to try it: make a speech edit without hunting through the timeline.
We generated the synthetic woman with Descript's native photo-avatar tool for this test. Avatar generation used 18.1 AI credits. It is an illustration brought to life, not a real customer or a filmed presenter. The FreeStack review uses a separate male narrator; the female voice appears only in the before-and-after examples.
Native Karaoke Classic captions highlighted the spoken word in the edited clip. We then checked an actual Descript video export: 720p with the Descript watermark. A selected resolution in an export menu is not enough proof; the downloaded result matters.
Studio Sound used 3 AI credits. We ran it on clean synthetic speech to test the workflow, not to benchmark noise removal from a bad microphone. Filler removal found and removed one "um", taking 13.7 seconds to 12.7 seconds, and used another 3 AI credits. Those are our measured requests, not a fixed price for every future job.
Underlord used 3.8 AI credits to suggest edits. We did not apply those suggestions, so we cannot claim it improved the finished video. Cedric stock AI speech produced a 6.9-second line for 1 AI credit, with a working WAV download. We did not test custom voice cloning.
Free includes 60 media minutes per month and 100 one-time AI credits at signup. The AI allowance does not refill every month. Our usage ledger showed separate charges for avatar generation, Studio Sound, filler removal, Underlord and stock speech. AI usage varies by request; these examples are not a universal tariff.
The export limit is the main practical boundary. Free kept a Descript watermark at 720p. Current Hobbyist pricing is $16 per person per month with annual billing or $24 month to month, with 10 media hours, 400 monthly AI credits and watermark-free 1080p exports. Check the current plan before relying on a clean deliverable.
Our 4.3/5 grade reflects a strong test of Descript's core workflow: transcript editing, native captions and a working talking-avatar demo. The tool is great for this kind of short project. The free plan is the limit, not a failure of those tested features: one-time AI credits and watermarked 720p exports make it a starting point rather than an unlimited production plan. This is an editorial score for our test, not a benchmark of every feature.

The catch
The tool worked well in our test; the restriction is the free allowance. Free exports are 720p with a Descript watermark, and the 100 AI credits are a one-time signup pool, not a monthly refill. Our avatar alone used 18.1 credits. Plan for a paid tier if you need regular AI work or clean, watermark-free exports.
What the real test showed
Fresh recorded proof from the v8 test. The avatar is synthetic; the editor, usage ledger and export are real.

Transcript cuts took the source from 13.7 to 5.6 seconds. Karaoke Classic highlights the word being spoken.

Our requests: avatar 18.1 credits; Studio Sound 3; one-um filler removal 3; Underlord suggestions 3.8; Cedric stock AI speech 1. These are measured examples, not fixed prices.

Actual native export: 720p with a Descript watermark. The avatar and native captions are visible in the downloaded result.
Descript free plan: questions people ask
Is Descript free forever?
The Free plan has no trial deadline shown, but it has 1 media hour per month, one-time signup AI credits and watermarked 720p export. Stock AI speech is a limited trial.
Are the 100 AI credits monthly?
No. The current Free plan says 100 AI credits at signup;public pricing labels them one-time.
Can I export without a watermark on Free?
Our Free export had a Descript watermark at 720p. Hobbyist is the first plan shown with 1080p watermark-free export.
Did FreeStack test custom voice cloning?
No. We generated a 6.9-second line with the stock Cedric voice and exported its WAV. Custom voice cloning was not tested.
Descript impressed us: real transcript cuts, native karaoke captions and a working avatar made this a strong free-plan test. We recommend trying it on a short project. One-time AI credits and watermarked 720p exports limit regular production; clean exports and more AI use need a paid plan.
